Program Review: Timberline Knolls Residential Treatment Center for Women

Recently, I was able to visit Chicago’s Timberline Knolls residential treatment center.  This is my review of their facility.

Timberline Knolls discreetly serves women (12yrs+) suffering from eating disorders, depression, as well as substance abuse and severe trauma/PTSD.

They believe that recovery from such conditions is a deep-rooted process for women, requiring distinctive treatments for various stages of life.  Their focused attention on these details makes them a one-of-a-kind program.

Many of the adult women coming to Timberline Knolls have been in one type of recovery or another for long periods of time.  In addition, some have children at home and others have unique, specific needs.

Some have had relapse triggered by significant life challenges including, but not limited to a death in the family, separation of a relationship or professional challenges.

Younger residents of the program continue their education via the state-certified Timberline Knolls Academy.  They benefit from a tight integration of both education and healthy, age appropriate living conditions that support their social, formative and clinical needs.

The Timberline Knolls Treatment Approach

The Timberline Knolls treatment approach targets the core underlying issues that are common among women with many different disorders, including those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder.  Some women seek residential treatment for a single diagnosis, while others may have multiple diagnoses, or conflicting diagnoses from multiple treatment providers.

Timberline Knolls is situated on 43 lush acres of land. Their location is just a short distance from Chicago’s O’Hare and Midway airports.  The American Institute of Landscape Architects acknowledged the property for excellence in design.  Residents and staff alike enjoy quiet surroundings that include a large lake, and several reflecting pools as well as outdoor activity fields.  The offices are contemporary in addition to being comfortable.

There are four private cabin-like living quarters on the property.  Each is staffed 24/7 with nursing and clinical.  Timberline Knolls also provides on-grounds security staff 24-hours daily to ensure the well-being and safety of the residents and staff.

Expenses, Insurance and Financing

The monthly expense for Timberline Knolls is approximately $26,250.00.  The day-by-day rate is comprehensive in coverage, and covers all clinical, instructive, mental, behavioral/milieu, nursing and expressive helpful administrations around the clock. This also covers all individual, family and group treatments as well as housing and meals.

Non-included elements include off-site medical treatment (pediatrics, dentistry, gynecology, hospitalization, prescriptions and other such outside services.

When necessary, Timberline Knolls works with resident’s insurance company to get as much covered as possible.  Affirmations instructors enable residents to research benefits. In the event that insurance coverage is not available, Timberline Knolls has financing options.

Summary and Recommendation

Timberline Knolls got off to a rough start under the original leadership in 2005.

Since then, new management has been focused on quality programming and legitimate financial practices.  They provide quality clinical and occupational programming, yet could be more transparent about the actual costs of residency.

I encourage prospective residents to visit the facility and ask as many questions as they can.  I recommend hiring an instructive specialist or caseworker to visit the facility with you.  They are able to ask sensitive questions that may leave prospective residents feeling awkward.  At such a high investment level, this is a choice that you ought not make alone.

I have referred a few clients to Timberline Knolls with positive results.  I feel confident in my recommendation of this program, especially for those in need of treatment for ongoing, progressive eating disorders.
